It was 1987 and five paesani – Antonio Cristiano, Giuseppe Masi, Vito Cristiano Pasquale Masi, and the late Pietro Gasparrini – struck up a conversation at a family wedding. They talked about family, about work, and about their beloved hometown. So many Castelgrandesi were now living in Montreal, and perhaps, the five men discussed, it might be time to start an Association that would unite the paesani to celebrate social and religious occasions beyond weddings and funerals. By the time the wedding party had ended the five men had hatched their plans.

The first meetings were catered around the discussion of the Association’s mandate, its activities and its constitution. Attendance was small, but eventually that number would rise to thirteen – the thirteen men that would eventually make up the Association’s first executive board.

The Associazione Maria SS. di Costantinopoli di Castelgrande in Montreal was officially founded on May 16, 1988, with the implementation of its constitution. Antonio Cristiano was elected as the association’s first president, a position that he would hold for ten years. Giuseppe Masi was elected as the association’s first vice-president, and in 1998 would become president, a position he would also hold for ten years. Both Antonio Cristiano and Giuseppe Masi are still active members of the executive committee. Nicola Pennimpede became president of the Association in 2006 and held that post for eight years. In November of 2014, Angela Federici, a long time board member and President of the Comitato Donne, became the fourth president of the Assiociation. She is the first woman to hold the post.

È il 1987, e cinque ‘’paesani’’, Antonio Cristiano, Giuseppe Masi, Vito Cristiano, Pasquale Masi e lo scomparso Pietro Gasparrini – si ritrovano a chiacchierare nel corso della celebrazione di un matrimonio di famiglia. Si parla di familiari, di lavoro e del loro amato paese. Ci si dice che ormai tanti Castelgrandesi vivono a Montreal e che forse è arrivato il momento di dar vita a una associazione che possa riunirli anche per celebrare feste religiose ed eventi comunitari, e non solo matrimoni e funerali. In breve, quando quella fatidica festa di matrimonio giunge al termine, i cinque uomini hanno già le idee chiare.

I primi incontri vertono sul tema del mandato dell’associazione, le sue attività e la sua costituzione. Agli inizi, la partecipazione è esigua, ma arriverà ad annoverare tredici membri che formeranno il primo comitato esecutivo dell’associazione.

L’Associazione Maria SS. di Costantinopoli di Castelgrande in Montreal viene ufficialmente fondata il 16 maggio del 1988, insieme all’attuazione della sua costituzione. Antonio Cristiano è il primo presidente dell’associazione, carica che ricoprirà per dieci anni. Giuseppe Masi è, invece, il primo vice-presidente e nel 1988 diventerà presidente, carica che anch’egli conserverà per un decennio. Entrambi sono ancora membri attivi del comitato esecutivo. Nicola Pennimpede divenne presidente dell’Associazione nel 2006, ed è stato presidente per otto anni. Nel novembre del 2014, Angela Federici, un membro del consiglio esecutivo da tempo e Presidente del Comitato Donne, è diventato il quarto presidente dell’Associazione. Lei è la prima donna ad occupare il posto.
